Sammy (Sam Halpern) developed complications from an overwhelming streptococcal infection and on February 7 of this year was rushed to the hospital in critical condition with a sudden and severe infection in his blood. In a matter of hours Sammy went from being a spunky, happy six-year-old to a child kept alive by emergency surgeries and life support.
After 7 days on life support his body was able to start supporting itself but it was apparent that the infection had caused irreparable damage to his limbs. By the end of the month, Sammy had lost both legs below the knee as well as his right hand to this dreadful infection.
Sammy’s fight has been incredible but it’s far from over. Medical costs for Sam’s care and rehabilitation are extraordinary and will be ongoing for the rest of his life.
So, it is for these facts and reasons that this event was held. It is our hope that the funds raised from this event will help Sammy as he fights to get healthy.
The North Shore District Dental Society was honored to host this event. Once again, thank you to all who gave of themselves through their work and participation and all those who otherwise supported this very worthy event.
